Tesco Pays £119,000 for Fire Safety Law Breaches ...
Supermarket giant Tesco has been fined £95,000 in April 2010 and ordered to pay over £24,000 in costs after pleading guilty to five breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO).
London Fire Brigade, prosecuting, said firefighters were called to a fire at Tesco's Colney Hatch store in Barnet on 14 October 2007. When they arrived found the premises locked but managed to gain access after attracting the attention of an employee who was restocking shelves. There had been a fire in the staff kitchen but it had been put out by staff using extinguishers and a fire blanket. There was still a significant amount of smoke in the kitchen, the corridor and staff locker rooms and crews had to ask staff several times to evacuate the premises.

The world's largest consumer-owned business, the Co-operative Group, was fined over £200,000 in April 2010 after pleading guilty in Southampton Crown Court to serious fire safety breaches at its store in Shirley Road, Southampton.

Record £400,000 fine for retailer New Look's fire safety breaches ...
High street retailer New Look has been fined £400,000 and ordered to pay £136,052 in costs after pleading guilty to two breaches of fire safety legislation, following a serious fire at its Oxford Street store in London.
Thirty five fire engines and around 150 firefighters attended the fire on 26 April 2007, when around 450 people form the store and surrounding premises were evacuated. The first call to the fire service did not come until an office worker in an adjacent building took action, and the delay meant that the fire had already broken through the second floor windows when firefighters arrived. Despite the building's fire alarm sounding, the alarm was reset on at least one occasion, said London Fire Brigade.

Solitaire Property Management Limited were fined £1,500 plus costs of £2,000 after pleading guilty to two offences at Southampton Magistrates Court relating to charges of the company's failure to comply with fire safety law.
Solitaire Property Management Limited failed to respond to a number of requests for information relating to the premises known as Sundowner Block, 31 Channel Way , Ocean Village, Southampton, under Article 27 of the Fire Safety Order.
School Prosecuted and Fined for Fire Safety Breaches...
The governing body of St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, has been successfully prosecuted by Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority for breaching fire safety regulations. The school was fined a total of £8,000 - a £2,250 fine and also ordered to pay the prosecution costs of £5,750.
White Swan, Arundel, Fined £25,000 for Serious Breaches of Fire Safety Regulations...
A fire at The White Swan hotel, near Arundel, in March 2007, left ten guests trapped in their bedrooms. Although the guests were eventually rescued by firefighters the hotel's former management company Mill House Inns Trading Ltd., were fined £25,000 plus £11,000 costs after pleading guilty to serious breaches of fire safety laws.

Paul Dailey, landlord and proprietor of the George and Dragon in Swallowfield, Berkshire, was prosecuted last month at Reading Magistrates Court after a routine inspection by fire safety officers in May 2007. Dailey was fined £4,000 after pleading guilty to 10 charges under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. Costs of £3,948 were also awarded against Mr Dailey.

A director of Maureen O'Brien Ltd (the company which formerly owned the high street chain Joy) Girish Chadha, was fined £5,500 in both fines and costs for 11 contraventions of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Property Manager Fined over £5,000 for Poor Safety Standards ...
A property manager in west London was fined £5,600 and ordered to pay substantial costs after being found guilty of seven breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Offences included failing to properly assess the fire risks, and failing to provide a smoke alarm and ensure the escape route was protected by fire-resistant doors. The case related to a fire at a house converted into flats in Hayes in September 2007. Two residents were hurt as they escaped by jumping from a first-floor window.
